Comparing Body Density of Lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) to Different Operational Welfare Indicators

چکیده
Farmed lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus) are commonly used as cleaner fish in the salmonid aquaculture industry, but a knowledge gap exists with regards to their body density. Filling this is of importance, has no swim bladder and thus relies on alternative methods for buoyancy, i.e., density difference between its surroundings. The aims study were measure investigate correlation different operational welfare indicators. A total 138 sampled at five sites situated Faroe Islands. Weight water air was measured, calculated, assessed. average juvenile 1.030 g mL−1. Fulton’s K, stomach score, length negatively correlated density, while hepatosomatic index positively Liver colour groupings too broad final definitive conclusion. gained from might help industry improve understanding indicators lumpfish. Additionally, also husbandry feeding practices.

Cryopreservation of lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus (Linnaeus, 1758) milt
This study has established a successful protocol to cryopreserve lumpfish Cyclopterus lumpus (Linnaeus, 1758) milt. Three cryosolutions were tested based on Mounib's medium; the original medium including reduced l-glutathione (GSH), the basic sucrose and potassium bicarbonate medium without GSH, or with hen's egg yolk (EY). Dimethyl sulphoxide (DMSO) was used as the cryoprotectant along with al...
متن کاملDevelopment of anaesthetic protocols for lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.): Effect of anaesthetic concentrations, sea water temperature and body weight
In recent years, use of lumpfish (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) as cleaner-fish to remove sea-lice have been chosen by many salmon farmers in Europe and Canada as an alternative to medical treatment, which has led to large scale production of lumpfish. At present, there is limited knowledge of how lumpfish respond upon anaesthesia, which anaesthetics and concentrations that are efficient and condition...
متن کاملSkin mucus proteins of lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus)
Fish skin mucus serves as a first line of defense against pathogens and external stressors. In this study the proteomic profile of lumpsucker skin mucus was characterized using 2D gels coupled with tandem mass spectrometry. Mucosal proteins were identified by homology searches across the databases SwissProt, NCBInr and vertebrate EST. The identified proteins were clustered into ten groups based...
متن کاملPhagocytosis and Respiratory Burst Activity in Lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus L.) Leucocytes Analysed by Flow Cytometry
In the present study, we have isolated leucocytes from peripheral blood, head kidney and spleen from lumpsucker (Cyclopterus lumpus L.), and performed functional studies like phagocytosis and respiratory burst, as well as morphological and cytochemical analyses. Different leucocytes were identified, such as lymphocytes, monocytes/macrophages and polymorphonuclear cells with bean shaped or bilob...
متن کاملStocking density effects on broiler welfare: identifying sensitive ranges for different indicators.
Although stocking density is perceived as a topic of major importance, no consensus has been reached on what density would allow for good welfare. In the present study, the welfare of 4 replicates of birds stocked at 8, 19, 29, 40, 45, 51, 61, and 72 broilers per pen (or 6, 15, 23, 33, 35, 41, 47, and 56 kg actually achieved BW/m(2)) was studied using 6 welfare indicators. Density did not affec...
